Trust me, I’m a cat connoisseur.

Cats usually get a bad rep especially on the internet due to their cold and indifferent PETittudes (oh, the puns). Truth be told, that’s not true. Every cat breed has individuals with amazing personalities. These family-friendly cats won’t try to murder you at night – jokes.

On a side-note, I would personally recommend adopting from a shelter, because there are a lot of cats in need of a loving family. However, if you would like to purchase a purebred cat here’s a list of family-friendly cats (in no particular order), that have proven to be extremely friendly and affectionate and that will turn skeptics into believers:

1. THE EXOTIC SHORTHAIR

THE EXOTIC SHORTHAIR
I’m not fat, I’m fluffy!

Have you grown out of your teddy bear/ plush animal phase? Would you like to have something else to replace the void? Well look no further, because the Exotic Shorthair is the next best thing!

With its rounded ears, big eyes, and squashed face, one could say that the Exotic is a teddy bear cosplayer. Since this cat is the short-haired version of the Persian (for the most part), it is an excellent choice for people who cannot be bothered with excessive grooming, or simply have no time for it.

This overall “round” cat (#adorable) has a compact body and short legs. The Exotic can be very quiet and calm, but also inquisitive and full of energy. They rarely demand your attention by meowing way too much.

Experts recommend that you should wipe the creases and folds of flat-faced cats daily. This helps keep them healthy and clean at all times.

These family-friendly cats are, without a doubt, a joy to be around. Now go get yourself an Exotic Shorthair! (I mean… only if you want to.)

2. THE MAINE COON

THE MAINE COON

The Maine Coon is a beautiful cat, native to the state of Maine. Weighing at about 4 to 8 kg (9 to 18 pounds), it is one of the largest domesticated cat breeds. Some even tip the scales at as much as 9 kg (20 pounds), but they do not reach full physical maturity until the age of 3 to 5.

“The gentle giant,” as it was nicknamed due to its loving and sociable nature, has the following characteristics: thick, two-layered fur coat, triangular body shape, long bushy tail, and robust bone structure.

Known for its gentle personality and playful temperament, the Maine Coon is not only great with children, but also with dogs. Although it is not your typical lap cat, the Maine Coon likes being with people and enjoys receiving your attention, but not to the point of neediness.

Maine Coons are very intelligent family-friendly cats. Believe it or not, they actually enjoy playing fetch and will happily learn new tricks. They also enjoy a good ol’ brain teaser, such as puzzle games. I know, right?!

So what are you waiting for? Go get yourself a Maine Coon, if gentle fluffballs are what you’re into!

3. THE RAGDOLL

THE RAGDOLL
Look into my mesmerizing blue eye! I’m hypnotizing you.

The Ragdoll is a gentle and very relaxed cat that collapses into your arms when picked up – hence the name “Ragdoll.” They will follow you around the house, greet you at the door, and snuggle with you on the couch. Ann Baker bred the cat for the first time in the 1960s.

Female Ragdolls weigh between 4.5 and 6.8 kg (10 and 15 pounds), and large males can sometimes weigh more than 9 kg (20 pounds). Now that’s a massive furball if you ask me. To ensure that their soft and silky fur does no mat, regular grooming is required.

The Ragdoll is good with other animals as well as children, because whenever they play they are careful not to use their claws or teeth. Ragdolls are also quick learners, especially when rewarded with food. They also retrieve toys and come to you when you call them. Some say that they are “puppy-like cats,” because Ragdolls do not throw a hissy fit when they are physically handled.

If you want a docile cuddle buddy, look no further than the Ragdoll.

4. THE BIRMAN

THE BIRMAN
Are you giving me food? I hope you are!

Renowned for its deep blue eyes, colour-pointed silky coat, and snow-white boots on all four paws, the Birman is a gentle, loving cat.

Expect Birman cats to follow you around from room to room and be involved in whatever you’re doing – they love you, so let them be. However, if you’re super busy, they can stay quiet and give you some space. They are very affectionate cats and love to be around people. Generally, Birman cats can weigh between 3.6 and 5.4 kg (8 and 12 pounds), which is something to keep in mind if big cats are not for you.

Its playful personality makes it perfect for families with children. They are also friendly towards other cats and dogs. The Birman enjoys being held and is always ready for a nice cuddle – it will melt in your arms EVERY TIME. Just think about that.

5. THE PERSIAN

family-friendly cats
OMG, I’m fabulous!

Persian cats are known for being quiet, calm, and sweetly affectionate. They are famous for their expressive eyes, chubby cheeks, and long, silky fur. Weighing at about 3 to 5.4 kg (7 to 12 pounds), the Persian is a medium-size cat.

These cats enjoy staying indoors – preferably in someone’s lap while being petted – so it would be best not to keep them outside (they would not be pleased). Because their fur is quite long and prone to matting, Persians require daily grooming as well as regular baths.

If Persian cats feel that someone cannot be trusted, they won’t even give that person the time of day. Even though Persians are affectionate cats, they usually give their full attention only to family members (well that’s good news) and regular house guests – whom they are familiar with.

Persians like to stay at ground level, so your curtains and kitchen counter will most likely be fine. Just give them regular meals, unconditional love, and some playtime – that way everyone will be happy and satisfied. They also have a small, pleasant voice (thought you might want to know).

These are the 5 family-friendly cats that stole my heart and will most definitely steal yours too! Make sure to make your home cat proof before welcoming your new furry friend.
